Every morning,
we bake like
nobody's
waiting.

Hand-rolled conchas, wood-fired tortillas, and recipes passed down through generations — made fresh before dawn, every single day.

Inside El Sombrero Bakery with shelves of fresh pastries

Our Story

A family bakery
rooted in Gastonia

El Sombrero Bakery has been a quiet fixture on East Franklin Boulevard for over three decades — not because we lack ambition, but because we have plenty of patience. Our founders came from a long line of Mexican bakers, and they brought with them not just recipes, but a conviction: that bread made with time and care tastes different.

Today, every concha is shaped by hand, every horchata is ground fresh, and every tortilla is pressed before your eyes. We don't rush the process. We don't need to — the customers who walk through our door know exactly what they're getting, and they keep coming back.

What We Make

The things worth
waking up for

Colorful traditional Mexican conchas with sugar crust

Hand-Rolled Conchas

Soft vanilla and chocolate bread topped with a crumbly sugar shell — shaped the old way, one batch at a time.

Fresh corn tortillas being pressed by hand

Fresh Corn Tortillas

Pressed to order from nixtamalized corn. Warm, pliable, and unlike anything from a factory — because we don't do factory.

Mexican donuts called orejas and cuernos

Orejas & Cuernos

Crispy, flaky, and dusted with powdered sugar. These aren't your average donuts — they're a morning ritual.

Loaves of Mexican bread including cuernos and cuates

Pan Dulce Selection

From polvorones to cuates, our bread case changes with the day — but the quality never does.

Glass of horchata with cinnamon dust

Horchata & Aguas

House-made horchata, jamaica, and tamarindo — blended fresh, never pre-mixed, always cold.

Steaming tamales ready to serve

Tamales & Savory

Weekend tamales in corn husks — pork, chicken, and rajas. Available while they last.
